They have beginning, middle and cancellation. They will end when and only when it becomes financially advisable to end them. Tell that to Breaking Bad, Next Generation, Seinfeld, Friends, Game of Thrones, Spartacus, Mad Men, Penny Dreadful, Veep, Kimmy Schmidt, iZombie, LOST, Six Feet Under... LOST was the game changer. I'm sure plenty of shows drag on a bit because there was no real narrative arch in mind, but, it's definitely not right to think of western shows the same way anymore LOST was the game changer? Not something like The Sopranos or The Wire or Six Feet Under or The Shield that actually have satisfying, critically lauded endings?
