In patriarchal societies, it unfortunately makes all too much sense. When family lineage is passed down primarily via men, said men have a strong interest in guaranteeing that their child is theirs. Female promiscuity muddies the waters of whose baby is whose, which is unacceptable in the eyes of those who want to pass their possessions and what-have-you to their kids. It's this same motivating factor which eventually lead patriarchal societies to simply opt for turning women into veritable property.
