I think there is a happy medium to allowing a child to make a decision and not being so authoritarian. EX:

Parent: Would you rather have grilled chicken and mashed potatoes or spaghetti?

I was given choices like this a child and greatly appreciate being involved in decision making. This helped build a bond between me and my grandparents (who raised me). It was less of an authoritarian dynamic and more of a groupthink sort of situation. As a result of moments like that, they taught me patience, reasoning, and respect.
