Still not seeing the problem

You don't see the problem with adding Pokemon that are basically a lazy rehash of an older Pokemon. Alrighty then.

Thats every generation. Thats literally the entire Pokemon franchise. No big deal.

Pokemon Gold had a demo version in 1997 that was recently datamined. The most interesting part of this was the Pokemon sprites in the game and how the early designs for many Pokemon from Gen 2 changed throughout the development of Gold/Silver, and how there are many scrapped designs that didn't make the cut before the game went gold, pardon the unintended pun. It shows how GameFreak, at the time, were willing to spend a lot of time redesigning Pokemon if they didn't think the designs of the Pokemon were strong enough and were willing to scrap Pokemon rather than include them if they didn't think the designs were good enough. The result is a game with many iconic Pokemon designs that feel like worthwhile additions to the franchise, regardless of competitive viability.

I wish that GameFreak had maintained these high standards when designing new Pokemon in Gen 5, If they had culled or reworked poorly-designed Pokemon, like what was done in Gen 2, it would have resulted in a far stronger roster of Pokemon than what we got, even if the amount of Pokemon received would have been less. Alas, this was not to be and it means that Gen V is the worst game, in terms of the overall roster of Pokemon added to the franchise.
