It can occupy both parts of speech. Often times we use the word 'female' when we mean 'woman.' We can't know the chromosomes of a person, only make educated assumptions based on how they present themselves. As a result, it is more accurate and more humanizing to say 'woman' in most circumstances. Still, I try not to be overly didactic about it because I understand what's being said (unless someone is being ridiculous talking about females in the club like a hip hop dj from the aughts, then I'll assume they honestly don't know and ruin their evening).

Still I mostly only hear that use of the word female as a noun in professional circumstances or in some research context. That clinical connotation is part of what makes the word so noticable to me when I hear it in more casual conversation.
