But you can still work under certain conditions, basically you go through a year long trial period where you "test" your ability to work while still receiving benefits. Also if your disability comes with costs/bills, that price is taken into consideration when calculating your 1k per month limit. So if it costs you $800 in bills and you make $1700 per month, then you are only at $900 out of the $1000 limit.
