A&W restaurants and A&W root beer haven't been the same company for, what, like 20 years? It's been a really long time. The reason the root beer you get in the restaurant tastes so different is because it's a completely different company's product.

This isn't really true. The restaurant chain may have been sold to another company, but that company can't make its own recipe and call it A&W root beer.

A&W root beer is a copyrighted recipe. You can't just make your own different recipe and call it A&W.

The real reason why the restaurant drink tastes different is because it is a fountain drink. Fountain drinks always taste different (and better) than their canned equivalents. The aluminum in cans affects the taste, making it more metallic. This is true whether its Pepsi or Coke or A&W.
