Isn't your sexuality something personal that you generally keep out of your professional life? I understand the need to come out to your close friends and family, but to the public, or in a professional environment? If you took some time to think about it, you'd figure this out for yourself. When you're in a public position like this, coming out is empowering to other people. Other gay people won't feel as alienated in the sports community if they see high profile people like this come out and are accepted. That's why him getting applauded is a big deal. But no, the average person doesn't really have much reason to out themselves to anyone but close family and friends. That makes sense.
