Topic | Why was Russia part of the G8 but not China, Spain, South Korea, Australia |
ParanoidObsessive 06/11/18 11:52:08 AM #3: | Because Russia was invited in while the USSR was collapsing, and the idea was that pulling them into stronger ties with the heavily capitalist powers of the West might help accelerate their own transformation and keep them from backsliding. China wasn't invited in because it's not just about economics. But even if it was, China wasn't the global economic powerhouse you think of it being today in the 80s/early 90s. A lot of its stratospheric growth took place in the mid-90s and into the 2000s. And at the time Russia joined the G8, it actually did "outrank" China in terms of economy as judged by most common metrics. --- "Wall of Text'D!" --- oldskoolplayr76 "POwned again." --- blight family ...
