Eskimo is only derogatory because it's actually a specific tribe. Calling any native an Eskimo is like calling a random African a Zulu.

You know what, you may be entirely correct. I'm hearing that Inuit may also be a slightly dated term. In day to day conversations, I would typically use First Nations, Indigenous or in some specific cases, Aboriginal.

The distinction between first nations people in northern regions vs southern regions is likely antiquated.
