Tons of things that become standard aren't passed because "the people" approve of them.... Infrastructure upgrades and social policies that would cost companies money (one way or another) are axed because of big donors needing to post ever-increasing profits year after year. Politicians offer up lip service to the masses with a few things to help get elected or look better than their competition. It's never because they care about right or wrong. That's why I hate the two-party system, there's really no accountability.
