Karo: A young Afghani girl decides to fool the Taliban by crossdressing, and this works out because they have no clue what girls look like when they're not wearing attire that makes them look like space aliens from a bad 1950's sci-fi flick. Parvana herself is wonderful and helps elevate the movie from ever becoming boring. Her strength and determination are what the heart of the movie is about. Sadly, much of the magic present in Cartoon Saloon's other movies simply isnt here this time save for a few scenes of out-of-place Afghani folk tales randomly told by the characters every 5 minutes. The rich backgrounds the studio is known for are gone and replaced by realistic dingy brown paintings that would feel at home in a modern first person shooter game. Even the unique character styling that caught the eye in Kells and Song is gone - the people of the Breadwinner world look dull and washed out, caught in a weird state of limbo somewhere between anime and rejected Wind Waker concept art. All that being said, its not a bad movie. In fact, it's a very good movie. But it boggles the mind as to why anyone thought it would be a good idea to match up a studio known for visual stylishness with a heavily realistic story. It just doesnt work right.

Ermine: Incredibly moving story with top notch animation and visuals. While it's not really my kind of movie, it still managed to hook me. Good stuff.

Stifled: I liked the main character a lot. Kid characters, done well, can be very compelling and fun to watch. Here we have a Mulan story with the war backdrop being replaced by a pure need to survive in a mans world. I would be honored to have a girl like Parvana as my daughter. She really won my heart over the course of the movie. That said, this movie is HORRIBLY depressing. Good lord. I can only take so much negativity when I watch a movie. I prefer uplifting and happy things. Its a double-edged sword, really. This movie has an important story to tell and tells it beautifully. But that kind of thing just really isnt what I look for in a movie. While I cant see myself rewatching it, I am very glad I experienced it.

Traviss opinion: He wasnt interested. Pretty sure I watched this after Cars 3, so hard act to follow for him anyway. Kid loves cars.
