If you lie to the police and they catch you in that lie, then that already paints you as having no integrity and could imply that you have more to hide. If you tell the truth to the police and explain you were freaked out which is why you lied about it to begin with, then it shows that you have some sense of what right is. Based on OP, you did nothing wrong. Lying about doing nothing wrong to the police is suspicious as all hell and if you make a statement attesting to the fact that you did nothing to do nothing wrong then you're committing a crime.
