I don't know about the quality of the light novels because I don't read LN's at all, but I thought the high points of the anime were the early part of the first arc (before bad writing killed it), the GGO arc, and the Ordinal Scale movie. I thought the Mother's Rosario arc was "meh", not necessarily bad, but not that great either. Hell, I actually think Ordinal Scale was the best thing we've had in the SAO anime so far, because it also trimmed out some of those problems I mentioned with the main series. Kirito wasn't OP as fuck just because he was the protagonist and he actually had to work to improve himself, and the movie also minimized the relationship drama.
