There are some events from the main series that explains how things are in the in-story world in general, but they're not really necessary to know. But if you're interested, the only parts of SAO (with Kirito) I consider to be good are Progressive (standalone reboot-ish LN), Mother's Rosario (main LN volume 7, season 2 ep 18+), and Alicization (main LN volume 9+, season 3).
