It could be where you're located. I don't really remember the fries at the 5 Guys I go to, but I usually don't get fries at most places. Or never really use to much. But I don't recall them being bad. That being said, they're aren't really that many place around with good fries. At least, not in the same area in my hometown. They are places most likely with better fries, but if none are close, then it kinda doesn't matter...

I'm usually of a like mind, I don't normally get fries. Their fries weren't bad, better than the burger, but the pricing for everything is outrageous. I was basically forced to get fries after I took note of what everybody else was eating, buying another couple burgers to make up the difference would have been absurd. Although perhaps saying never is too harsh, but they would have to lower their cost quite a bit to get me back in. This was several years ago, too, so they're likely even more costly now.
