It depends on the situation. If I see a spot on the left, but a truck across and over from it is sticking out, then I'll turn into the on-coming "lane" and cut back to the right, in order to back in on my non-blind-side. I couldn't pull in forwards because my truck won't make the left, so I'd have to back up then have to shimmy between the truck behind me and whatever is in front of me until I was facing the spot enough to get in.

If the situation is that there are two spots facing each other and no vehicle across impeding me, I'll pull into one then drive forward into the other so that I'm facing out.

Each situation is different, but I always make sure I'm centered and not crooked. I hate it when I can tell someone just made a last-minute hard-right because their ass-end is poking into the spot beside theirs. It's actually against by-law in Calgary to use two spots if your vehicle can fit into one. So if I have the time, I will report it. No excuse for bad parking and not taking the extra three seconds to correct and show others some (not so) common courtesy.
