Because someone has to still pay for the food they're eating. Can't get it for free.

Speaking off, I'm still not sure why schools give free lunches based on income to kids already receiving SNAP. That's always seemed like double-dipping.

I know I joke that America is a 3rd world county where kids can't afford to eat, and I don't want to diminish the poor who might need these services...

You weren't allowed to leave campus (unless you were a senior) so those were your only options.

I think that might be the main difference - even elementary school students are free to leave and come back any time during the day.

America actually has laws against letting young kids just travel by themselves. Does Canada -- an even more liberal-progressive nation -- not have similar laws?

Plus, most kids lived a good 5 miles or so from the school so it was not like they were going to walk home.

This is a fair and legitimate reason. But this sounds like an outlier.

It's really not. Most students tend to live miles from their school, unless it's a heavily urbanized area or some shit. By the time you'd walk to your house for lunch, your lunch break will have already ended a while ago.
