the military does not have a front line with the civilian population which is who an actual insurgency would consist of. the military is mixed in with the civilian populations and bases are surrounded by civilian towns. it would be an absolute bloodbath and youd have thousands of forces cut off as supply lines are disrupted and airports are over taken. if you really wanted to turn the population further on the govt then you can very easily take down the power grid causing more civilians to take up arms.

also while the civilian populations dont have the best body armor or heavy weapons they do tend to have a few big factors on their side. 1. the US has been at war for a very long time and has amassed a large veteran population who knows how the military works along with bubba's who put together make shit crap all the time so you have a supply of IED's and unlike the deserts of iraq theres a lot of wooded areas, natural chokepoints and large cities that would make either collateral damage a major problem or would be hard to actually find a target in. this comes down to needing boots on the group to really get things done. 2. a lot of gun owners have been to the range FAR more than most military personnel and tend to camp and do out door activities far more as well. thats not a replacement for military training, but many people also woudlnt be completely green to their situation. 3. the military tends to have better body armor and heavy weapons, but funny enough they tend to get under equipped when it comes to a lot of other factors(largely due to bulk buying cheaper variants to save costs) which are things that civilians have better access to as far as newer versions of military items (watches, flashlights, optics, general camping equipment ect.).
