And the first syllable of that sounds like Ass which then got condensed to just A It's original context was always more along the lines of "Hell yeah". As previously stated, the A is supposed to stand for "awesome" (or "amazing", if you prefer). The joke mostly being that you were sort of censoring the word that didn't need censoring but letting through the word that did. Sort of the inverse of saying "That's f-ing awesome!" Over time it's mutated (language always does, and slang even more so), but it's still mostly used as a phrase of agreement.
