Some of the optional bosses force you to hone your skills, but if you allocate charms properly, it has a pretty comfortable difficulty curve throughout. One big thing that adds to the atmosphere and makes things more difficult is the checkpoints and maps. Checkpoints are very sparse, and when you buy maps, they're incomplete and can't be updated until you hit a checkpoint.
