I work in IT in a first-responder position (I'm the first person to go out and try to fix problems; if I can't fix it, I forward it to the next level of technician). Most of the time, I just do random things and hope the problem somehow fixes itself. It does quite often and people here think I'm some kind of tech genius because of it, even though I usually have no idea what I'm doing. I read this quite often lol. Something like yours, or people in IT who do a quick Google search and do what that says. For a lot of IT problems, people would be surprised to find how much they can solve on their own if they just tried. I don't work tonight so I haven't showered today.
