In the prairie provinces at least, if you aren't a social butterfly and a huge alcoholic then you're automatically a creep and a drain on society. If your a socially awkward guy like me you'll be ostracized and alienated. My best friendships have been formed through online gaming, Americans specifically from California seem like really cool people.
