I have a mix of hardwood floors and carpet. Ive never asked guests to take off their shoes personally but I dont mind if other hosts do ask. Most people tend to see how clean my house is and just take off their shoes.

The only time I got offended was when my brother in law was staying over. I had just finished mopping the floors when he went out into the backyard barefoot to make a call. Then he walked inside and tracked dirt all over the floors. I asked my husband to say something to him, I was pissed. Like wtf put some damn shoes if youre going to go outside. I had to clean his nasty feet print.
