Topic	It's extremely rude to ask house guests to take their shoes off

I'm not disputing that it's rude to not take off your shoes IF THEY ASK. But they very act of asking in the first place is rude. They're being rude first, but like you said, it's their house. You have to follow their rules or leave, even if their rule is stupid. They're not being rude at all. It's rude to go over to someone's house and not immediately take off your shoes.
