I've never seen the show but I have seen Breaking Bad and the lengths people go to pretend Skyler is a horrible person and Walt is a hero has lead me to the conclusion that the fanbases' opinions on what characters are "awful" is largely determined by how much camera time they have as opposed to anything they do.

So I'd assume however gets the most camera time (other than an outright villain) is the least awful character on HIMYM. At least according to the fanbase.

For that example I don't think it's the camera time factor but rather the fact that said internet people fanbase hate women, hence why they constantly called her the b word and praised psychopath walter.

It's more about progression.

Walt is the guy you're following. He's pushing the story forward and doing cool and interesting things.

Skyler is just an annoyance along the way, constantly weighing him down.

True, that's also another way to look at it. It's difficult to see it from their point of view because like with Dexter, I wanted him to be caught from the very first episode; I never really rooted for him the way others did.
