Usually have attendants watching the transactions take place on their own screen Watching half a dozen registers' worth of transactions on a separate screen isn't going to help them make sure everything gets scanned. no, but they are going to be able to notice if you didn't scan your case of soda, or some other similar big item. these machines also have scales in them, and there is a rough estimation of what an item should weigh in the system. it's why some machines freak out when go to scan, say, a gallon of milk and the machine goes UNEXPECTED ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA because you rested it on the bagging area before scanning it Smaller items, however, are going to be notably harder to notice. Regardless of whether or not there's an attendant on the self-serve area, that attendant isn't going to have the same view of the cart that an attendant at a normal register would have. --- This is my signature.
