The test isnt hard, but a lot depends on what state youre in and who is conducting the test.

In Massachusetts, were tested by the state police. My first time, the trooper told the entire group he was there to fail people. Seemed like a dick. He was doing everything to the letter. If you made one mistake, he failed you. Almost no one passed that day.

My second time taking the test was a lot better. The cop was much friendlier and didnt have a chip on his shoulder. Only guy that failed was this dude that hit a telephone pole on his test drive lol

Not sure about other states, but the Mass RMV has books with all of the information you need for a CDL exam, including test questions that will appear on your permit test (literally the same exact questions) and all the stuff you need to learn for the pre-trip and air brakes tests.

For me, the driving and skills test was super easy. I had difficulty with the pre-trip and air brakes check, just because theres so much to remember. What helped me was to transcribe everything from the book into notes, and re-write the notes a few times. Writing everything out long hand helps me remember shit, but you can do whatever you need to help you study.
