It's purely psychological. I don't think this family gives a shit about their lawn. They felt threatened and probably were in a state of fear for a long time after it happened. If they don't want to instantly forgive this dude then who cares? They didn't even say they wouldn't forgive him so I'm not sure what you're trying to point out here.
