How much of a love story is it? Guillermo is my favorite director but I'm not into romance at all. I think it detracts from movies tbh.

The movie have a little bit of everything actually.
At its heart, it's this twisted little romance story but there's a nice blend of some action, comedy (way more funny than I thought it would be going in), personal and political drama and of course, the fantastical edge Del Toro is known for.

Species doesn't matter. Is it sappy? Or is there intrigue outside of their romance?

I thought it was really well done. Just like Pan's Labyrinth (which it feels like a spiritual successor of in some ways), the movie ends leaving potential aspects of the main character left up to interpretation, so there's probably more going on with their relationship than we know.

There was one particular scene that was a bit weird and off putting (which is funny considering the whole premise of the movie). You'll know exactly what I'm talking about when you see it.
