I would argue she's less evil in the books,

Hahahah, oh god no.

In the show, she at least acknowledges that Joffrey is a sociopath. She feels remorse for some of the things she does. She genuinely loves her children. Weird as it may be, she truly loves Jamie.

Book Cersei never feels remorse for anything. She's a narcissist who loves her children because they are extensions of her. She loves Jamie because he looks like her with a penis and pretty much dumps him after he returns from his imprisonment and looks different. It's more ambiguous whether Margaery is a scheming power-grabber in the books, so it looks a lot like she's ruining an innocent girl.

She's a narcissist, yeah, but when we get to see things more from her perspective it's a lot more clear that what she's doing is because she's broken. Her whole world gets ripped away from her, she believes the little brother she always hated killed her son and her father and is coming for her. So what she's doing is more clearly shown to be paranoia rather than just "I'm an evil ice queen" like she's depicted in the tv series.
