The establishment of the liberal international order, which Trump so despises, is the foundation of American power, and allows us to exert control far and beyond what our already vast resources would suggest. That's why even in Europe, a region richer and more populous than we are, the US is the dominant military power. The same goes for other highly sophisticated and wealthy parts of the world whether Japan, Canada or Australia. If the US can manage to keep the institutions it created together for another few centuries perhaps it can truly be a nation that rivaled the great empires of the past, in terms of systemic domination, but it's gotta be hard to see that right about now.
