^Political discussions never stopped in my house growing up either... They still haven't when we have a family meal together. Myself, my dad, and my wife are typically on the same page, but my mom tends to be pretty left-leaning on specific issues and ends up butthurt. My parents both bring up Ronald Reagan positively on a regular basis though...

my mom loves Reagan too. I learned a long time ago, not only with my family though, but just about anyone, if you disagree with them politically its just best to keep your mouth shut, chance of changing someones mind on it, is too low to be worth the hassle. i've legit proven people wrong by backing my side up with facts or even getting them to admit their reasoning was stupid, and it didn't change who they voted for. too many people pick a side and stick to it no matter what.

Yeah, I didn't talk to my cousin-in-law for about 3-4 years because he got drunk after my wedding and kept trying to strong-arm me into agreeing with his political views. I was the bigger person and just told him to shut up and walked away... He followed me each time, so I left and then he texted me until I turned my phone off. It was a nightmare. For a while, we were basically best friends.

Things are back to normal between us now, but it took a long time to get to the point I was even willing to talk to him. Since patching things up, he's on edge about discussing anything political with me, but as that's all anyone talks about it still comes up most often. He'll usually ask for my opinion before providing his and never attempts to convince me of anything I disagree with.
