You have no idea what you're talking about. Engine braking is a world of difference alone if you live somewhere with a lot of inclined roads.

any engine braking effect is counteracted by the way most automatics handle cruising or deceleration. the whole idea is that you let off the gas and let the engine act as a huge air compressor. that's difficult to achieve when the transmission intentionally shifts into a high gear for efficiency or neutrals out. plus the gears/belts/clutches are designed to transmit torque to the wheels, not the other way around - it can be hard on the trans, especially if someone is dumb enough to force it into low gear at speed to achieve the desired effect
