You can see that directly after Overwatch came out, games with lootboxes start coming out every month. Sometimes, even just a few days in between.

Before that, you'd see a few months or even a few years between games with lootboxes.

So yeah, Overwatch kinda did popularize lootboxes.

A third of the games after Overwatch are in series that had lootboxes before Overwatch. Half of them are from EA or Activision, which were already shoving them into whatever they could.
