Kael'thas and his blood elves take over Tempest Keep, a fancy spaceship-like facility owned by some beings I won't bother explaining. Players enter this keep and defeat Kael'thas. They take one of his spheres as proof of his demise, but when they present it to the leader of Shattrath City, an image of Kael'thas appears and begins mocking them. He states that Kil'jaeden will return and we will all bow before his might. Turns out that Kael'thas didn't believe Illidan was going to honor his promise to give the elves a new source of magic. Addicted to the fel magic Illidan had already offered them, Kael'thas began speaking with Kil'jaeden. Kil'jaeden promises him great power, so Kael'thas abandons Illidan and joins the Burning Legion. Kael'thas is nursed back to health by a shivarra demon named Priestess Delrissa. He returns to Silvermoon City and reinvigorates the Sunwell with some stuff I won't go into here. He plans to use the Sunwell as a portal to bring Kil'jaeden into Azeroth, but he doesn't get to see that when it happens because we defeat him again.
