My state is at will, companies also end up paying people to stay home on a near constant basis due to improper terminations.

Then your state is not at will.

At will means they can fire you for any reason other then race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Depending on the circumstances they might need to pay severance pay (usually based on years of service), but they can still get rid of you and there is nothing you can do about it.

Good job not knowing the law.

Most Pennsylvania employers think that at-will employment means they can terminate an unsatisfactory employee at any time, for any reason (or no reason at all!).

If only employment relationships were that simple.

While our state presumes all employment at will unless otherwise agreed upon by the business owner and employee, in reality, at-will employment has its caveats and limitations. For example:

It doesnt apply to terminations for illegal reasons such as retaliation.
It doesnt prevent former employees from filing wrongful termination claims.
You cant fire an employee for refusing to engage in an illegal activity, like stealing from customers or cooking the books.

Point 1 and 2 are particularly relevant.

Hell, my first job out of high school lost just about every claim they had and had to pay people to sit on their ass at home or offer them their jobs back.
