Brah, did you see the mom cowering when the dad was talking to Billy? Even telling him "it's ok Neil" bc she was trying to diffuse, knowing he was about to get violent. That's abusive household, plain and simple. They don't have to come out and slap you with the implication (tho Neil literally comes out and slaps Billy so it's still super obvious >_>)

Bad dad also dropped a gay slur pretty readily, was surprised we didn't hear an n-word. Kids like Billy don't grow up hateful, they learn to hate from shitty abusive parents.

Honestly, it seemed less like cowering, and more like she was just a passive person who doesn't like confrontations. If they wanted to set up the dad as a villain, it should e been referenced more than a single scene of Billy causing a rather big problem, and getting slapped once because of it. They could've had Max say something along lines of "if you think he's bad, you don't want to meet his father." or something. Just throwing in a parental figure out of the blue, who simply corrects Billy's unhinged behavior in a single scene, isn't enough to excuse his previous behavior.

Max puts all the blame squarely on Billy, and throughout the season, it's Billy we see causing everyone problems. The only explanation we get from Max is that Billy is upset that his dad remarried. Which indicates this is not his normal behavior, but that he became this way after their parents married.

Edit: To clarify, I'm not saying the dad isn't abusive, or will be a villain. I'm just saying the scene we got didn't do an adequate job explaining Billy's previous behavior. If it was trying to play him off as the victim, it failed completely, especially as he simply left to continue causing the same problems he had been.
