Everyone: Haha, look at the way Disney has portrayed racist cultural stereotypes over the years Everyone else: Haha yeah it's so blatant Everyone: Like seriously this is the most racist shit ever, hahahahaha Everyone else: yeah it's ridiculous Someone: Well...maybe we shouldn't support that? Or at least not actively participate? Everyone all together: wtf??? wow jesus stop being so sensitive bunch of snowflakes cucks liberals lolololololol
I'm pretty sure when people talk about Disney's racist cultural stereotypes they're talking about years and years ago. Currently Disney goes out of their way to make culturally accurate characters based on actual folk tales and legends. Moana isn't a racist character, and kids dressing up as her isn't cultural appropriation.
This whole thing puts minorities in a weird spot when they demand better representation in film, but then complain the instant they're represented and get the standard movie character treatment. It's not going to end well for them.
Well that's also true.
I don't think it's wrong for kids to want to dress up as their favourite disney characters, but it pays for people to at least be aware of and respectful to the cultures they're adopting. That's all I'm saying. ---
