Opened up with one of the worst possible episodes it could have. Heavy focus on shogi players who aren't relevant to Rei's growth, as well as a heavy focus on comedy and Rei's bonding with bit characters, all as a means to show a small bit of development that could've been expressed in a much shorter and more satisfying way. Though I guess we actually did see character growth, which happened so little in the latter half of S1, so I guess it is showing some sign of reform.
