Standing for the anthem is also a political gesture. If you don't want politics in sports, you shouldn't want that either, but you're fine with that gesture because it agrees with your own politics.

Kneeling is no more obtrusive than standing. As a gesture, it's even respectful. People kneel to propose marriage. This brouhaha really is hot air.

A compromise would be to remove the anthem. Then nobody could use it as a political platform for any side. But we all know that would cause a firestorm if it were seriously attempted.
