I mean isn’t one of the points of the EC to “save us from ourselves” so to speak? Sounds like that’s exactly what you’re supposed to base it on... That was when electors actually had essentially free reign to vote for whoever they wanted to. The way that it works now, where we sort of break up the popular vote and distribute electoral votes that way, it's not doing anything to save us from ourselves.
