Try practicing with hard shading first (not crosshatching and stuff). Where you use complete blacks to separate shadow and light. This'll help you visualize a 3D model a bit better and how light affects it.

See how this image mostly only used pure blacks as shading? After that you can change it up by replacing the pure black shadows with line scratching/crosshatching to create gradient lighting. It's just the same as how people learning shading colored drawings start with cel-shading before moving on to more complex stuff.
