The IRS actually does notice many issues that appear to be mistakes or criminal actions. It's usually when you repeatedly ignore the IRS when the real shit hits the fan. And by all accounts the money seems to exist and is possibly fully accounted for at the moment. Is it possible that the IRS has missed something? Sure it happens, but usually when someone is being really nefarious in their actions and try to hide everything.
