I don't know the legal differences in the US, but I know that my parents helped run an NPO where they would get cash donations that go into a single coffer and at the end of the year they give out the interest accumulated from that account to projects in their scope of interest.

Sounds like that isn't the intention of Jhirard's charity, but at the same time if the money has been sitting and accumulating interest in that way, they could end up giving out more money over time than they actually take in.

If the money is still there and awaiting the proper organization that fits in-line with what they want to do, I'm disappointed that wasn't conveyed but I'm also not like, pissed off about it. That money is there and awaiting a place for it to go that makes sense. I have no doubt that it's likely no members of his family knew WTF they were doing in creating this charity and what exactly they HAD to do and not do.

But holding the funds for 9+ years. While telling your audience you're actively funding a university. With a quote on your website from a dean that got fired for funds mismanagement BEFORE you officially became an NPO. And still promote your fundraisers by saying you're actually funding said university a year or two after "finding out" the money's just been sitting on some bank account.

Not a good look.
