I've never quite understood the hype over Gengar. Haunter is pointier and has cool ghosty hands. But Gengar is just a round little guy. Cute sure, and there's plenty of cool fanart of it. But what puts it so far above Haunter or any of the newer ghosts?

* Gen 1 nostalgia
* It was on Ash's final team when he finally became Pokemon world champion in the Journeys anime, adding to the nostalgia factor for longtime fans
* Competitive viability in the games (it was consistently in OU tier for 6 and a half generations, only finally falling to UU midway into gen 7)
* "Cute round little guy but evil" is just a generally popular type of design
* It sort of looks like an evil version of Clefairy/Clefable, who's also quite popular, so a lot of people who like those two like Gengar too

Those are some of the factors that came to mind for me.
