It's been said both ways by more than one source, so...

I mean here are the facts

1.) You get plaque accumulation while sleeping along with other bacteria in your mouth
2.) Eating without brushing can get you sick due to ingesting that bacteria
3.) Brushing after eating can damage your enamel and actually weaken / hurt your teeth
4.) Rinsing after brushing removes a lot of the benefit of the actual brushing of your teeth
5.) It is better to chew sugar free gum or use mouth wash after eating instead of brushing unless you take a 30 minute break to let your teeth strengthen

So take what you will from that.
