I dunno, I just rank the Pokemon based on how much I like them, it doesn't feel that complicated. The only thing I find weird is liking Pokemon based on things like stats or typing - I've played competitive Pokemon since 1999 and this has never occurred to me. The Pokemon I would like, actually want to buy merch of, are almost totally divorced from being any good. I like, literally don't get it.

There's nothing weird about people factoring in how good a pokemon is for how much they like it, or for having favorite types (though I assume you meant strictly competitively and not aesthetically), just like not caring about its competitiveness isn't weird either. It's not like they're mutually exclusive anyway; I like dragonite cause it's big and goofy and ALSO cause it's really good.
