Gonna spitball some thoughts here

1. I think we're generalizing; Biden and Trump aren't successful because they're old, and their spots at the top of their respective parties reflects circumstances and qualities unique to themselves. We aren't having this conversation if Obama wasn't term limited or, imo, if Michelle had run in 2020. Likewise on the GOP side the people running against Trump are mostly of standard politician age.

2. The Democratic Party didn't have a tea-party type movement sweeping new faces into power over incumbent until very recently (and even then, I wouldn't say the recent progressive/socialist surge has had the tea party's success.) Challenging an incumbent is a good way to get your career prospects within the party stymied. This has resulted in a relative lack of young people in positions that Presidential candidates usually come from.
