And why do they care about their loved ones? It all comes down to the fact that their loved ones make them feel good. That's where the (good) selfishness lies.

And when that loved one makes them not feel good anymore (like, betrayal is what I'm mostly alluding to here)? They're no longer a loved one. Like that one Beatles song goes, "Love has a nasty habit of disappearing over night". I know that John Lennon meant something else by that, but still: love can vanish just as quickly as it can form.

Maybe I have a too utilitarian view of it, but that's how I see it.
